Just tested jabbus.org, it is server related: when compression and TLS are both offered the specs say that first we must activate TLS and then compression. Unfortunately after starting TLS the server doesn't offer any more compression, so the session goes on without it. Try deactivating TLS and you should see compressed traffic (password is still encrypted since the server supports digest authentication)

Hello, and sorry for this late reply, we had some tech issues on the forum.
Compression isn't only a client feature, but should be supported by the server.
Our jabber server (jabber.bluendo.com) supports compression, I don't know about Google/GTalk server. Which server are you using?

Hi,

if Lampiro says "Connection failed" it means it cannot use a network.
Are you sure the network is configured on your phone ?
Moreover to login you need a Jabber accont: you can create a new account on the jabber.bluendo.com server or any other jabber server.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to accept the TLS connection to our Jabber server just yet... though I'll keep toying with it.
It also prompts for the network to use constantly, but that may be something that can be resolved with a setting.

I have it running on a nokia e51 with no issues. Just a few comments come to mind at this point:

It's really easy to accidentally close the client and not knock it into the background

No way to change the notification sound. Right now it sounds like a short fart

There is no notification on the phone that a message has been received unless I bring lampiro into the foreground. I suspect that doing anything further in this regard would require some s60 specific programming.

Thanks!

First thing: Lampiro is a work in progress, so please if you encounter any problem, be sure you are running the latest Lampiro version. You can find the latest version on the Google Code page. Other places like the download page on Lampiro site and GetJar should always contain the latest version, but Google Code page is the first we update when releasing a new version.
GENERAL USE FAQs

1. When I first run Lampiro, what's the first screen I see?
Not all mobile phones have the same keys, so Lampiro need to learn the keys that on your phone are used as the menu keys. Usually those keys are 2: one on the left and one on the right, generally right below the screen.
This screen is shown only the first time you start Lampiro. If you update the application it won't be shown, unless you chose to "delete" the stored data (some phones ask for that when updating an application). To open it again, keep pressed the # key for a couple of seconds on the login screen.

2. HELP! I can login but the "menu" and "actions" buttons don't do anthing!
You may have missed or closed unwillingly the first screen. Close the application, restart it and when you see the login screen, keep pressed the # key for a couple of seconds. The key configuration screen will re-appear. Press the keys for the left and right menu keys of your phone as described in the above FAQ #1. Remember that this screen can be activated every time you see the login screen (i.e. every time you start Lampiro).

3. Should I tick the "new user" box?
It depends. If you're already familiar with Jabber, then you may leave the box unchecked and use your Jabber account.
If you are a GMail/GoogleMail user, you are a Jabber user (although you may not know it)! Untick the "new user" checkbox and insert into the user name box your GMail account name (remember to add @gmail.com after your user name) and your password into the password box.
If you don't know what Jabber or XMPP are, then tick the "new user" checkbox, choose an username and a password. Bluendo offers a server (jabber.bluendo.com) that you can use to create an account.

4. How can I chat with my friends from MSN, Yahoo, AIM, ...
Jabber can let you chat with those friends, using "gateways". On the "menu", select the voice "IM gateways", click on the "refresh" button and wait a bit. You should have a list of the gateways supported by the server you are connected. At the moment GMail/GTalk doesn't support gateways (we will add a way to let you use gateways from other servers in a next release of Lampiro).
When you have the list of IM Gateways, select the gateway you want and click the "register" button. You should be presented with a login form: insert there the login credentials of the IM System (i.e the msn user and password, yahoo user and password, ...). That should be enough. The gateway should connect and you will have then all of your contacts from the other IM system imported.
You can repeat the procedure for all the IM systems you use, be warned that this will mix all the contacts together, so you may create a bit of confusion in your roster.

5. I tick "compression enabled" under the advanced options, but I see really high traffic!
Sadly, compression is an optional feature whose real support depends on the server.
When you click on compression you ask the server if compression is supported; if the server supports compression then the connection should be compressed, otherwise, even if you tick the compression option, you'll get an uncompressed connection.
Our server (jabber.bluendo.com) supports compression, but not every server could support or be configured in the same way. Gmail/GTalk for example doesn't support compression.
If you experience an uncompressed connection, tou should ask your jabber provider if he can enable compression on the server.
I think that you probably got confused from the first screen when you started Lampiro for the first time.
There you can configure the keys for the menus: we know that the screen is confusing, but not all phones use the same keys for the menus and there's no easy standard about that.

In the login screen you can keep pressed the "#" key to configure again those keys.

Please, try and let us know.

Yes.

Is the error "connection failed" raised immediately after you press login or after a while (the MIDlet may be to be "trusted", i.e. digitally signed)

The first time it shows the 'progress bar' for a couple of seconds, subsequent connections fail immediately. It did note to me that it is not a trusted/signed application but gave me the option to approve going forward anyway (which I did, obviously).

Is there a "connection settings" specifically for Java Applications? On mine Sony Ericsson I can set two different connection profiles for internet (i.e. web) and Java application.

Not that I know of, but like I said it's a new phone. I'll do some digging and see if I can find anything.
